Cleaning the fridge is one of those tasks that everyone knows they need to do, but it’s not typically something that excites people. Often, this reluctance comes from not having a clear plan of attack. Fortunately, with the right products, tools, and techniques, cleaning the fridge can be a quick and efficient process.

Step 1: Unload

Start by turning off the fridge's cooling, if possible, to save energy while cleaning. Once the fridge is turned off, begin by unloading all of the items inside. It’s helpful to have a large, clear space, such as a table, counter, or floor, to place everything temporarily. With the fridge emptied, remove all the bins, shelves, and drawers, being careful during this step to avoid damaging any parts, as these can be difficult to replace.

Step 2: Spray Down

Generously spray the inside of the fridge, as well as the shelves and bins, with an all-purpose cleaner. For added cleaning power, sprinkle some baking soda into the fridge; it acts as a mild abrasive and a deodorizer. Allow the cleaner to sit for a moment, giving it time to loosen any grime or stains.

Step 3: Wipe

Use an all-purpose microfiber cloth to wipe down the interior of the fridge. Focus particularly on sticky spots, marks, and stains. For tougher-to-reach areas, such as corners and crevices, a cleaning toothbrush comes in handy. It’s also useful for scrubbing the gaskets, which should be cleaned regularly to prevent mold buildup and ensure the fridge seals properly.

One common problem area is the crisper drawers, which tend to accumulate stains from fruits and vegetables. Again, baking soda can work wonders in lifting these stains and leaving your drawers looking as good as new.

Step 4: Shelves & Drawers

After tackling the fridge interior, turn your attention to the shelves, bins, and drawers. A reusable scrub cloth works well for cleaning these items. Scrub each one thoroughly with warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry them. As you clean, it’s best to return the shelves and bins to the fridge as you go, since these items take up a lot of space.

Step 5: Reorganize & Declutter

As you begin putting the items back into the fridge, it’s the perfect opportunity to reorganize and get rid of expired items. Check the expiration dates of your food and, if necessary, give items a quick smell test to ensure they’re still good. Additionally, take a moment to wipe the bottoms of jars and containers before returning them to the fridge. This step helps maintain cleanliness and prevents future messes. It’s also a good idea to place a box of baking soda in your fridge at this point, and it should be changed about four times a year for maximum effectiveness.

By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to mastering fridge cleaning. With everything organized and the fridge looking fresh, you’ll feel more motivated to keep it that way. Remember, you don’t need paper towels for this task—some high quality microfiber cloths are a more sustainable, and more effective option.
